Heat oven to 160 degC fan bake. Grease a 17 x 27cm slice tin and line the base with baking paper with an overhang on all sides.
In a large bowl, place softened butter, treacle (or golden syrup), brown sugar and eggs and beat with an electric mixer until pale and creamy.
Sift in flour, baking soda, spices and salt. Reduce speed to low and mix to incorporate dry ingredients, then add hot water and mix just enough to combine.
Pour mixture into prepared tin and bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a skewer inserted in centre of cake comes out clean. Cool in the tin placed on a wire rack.
